Fly-Fishing Rainbow Trout in Crowsnest, Oldman & Castle Rivers

The Crowsnest, Oldman and Castle Rivers are ideal for walk and wade flyfishing for good rainbows, along with some cutthroat trout. The Crowsnest in particular is an easily wadable stream with rainbows averaging 14 – 16″, with 18″ fish being common.

Rainbow Trout

Crowsnest River

A jewel of southwestern Alberta, the Crowsnest River (or “the Crow”) is celebrated among fly‑fishermen for its accessibility, natural beauty, and abundant trout populations. Flowing east from Crowsnest Lake through canyon‑framed landscapes and joining the Oldman Reservoir, it offers an ideal mix of walk‑and‑wade fishing with excellent public access via bridges, particularly above Lundbreck Falls.

Anglers can expect an abundance of rainbow trout, often ranging from 14 to 16 inches, with 18–20‑inch specimens fairly common and even some rare giants topping 20 inches.

Oldman River

The Oldman River system, into which both the Crowsnest and Castle Rivers feed, is another fly‑fishing haven—especially for cutthroat and bull trout in its headwaters.

Castle River

More remote but richly rewarding, the Castle River system—including West and South Castle—hosts rainbow, cutthroat, bull trout, and mountain whitefish.

Together, the Crowsnest, Oldman, and Castle Rivers form a fly‑fishing trifecta—a mix of accessible yet wild waters, diverse and sizeable trout populations, and striking foothills and mountain landscapes.

  • Crowsnest River: legendary rainbow trout fisheries with vibrant hatches and accessible wading.
  • Oldman River system: beautiful headwaters for cutthroats and bull trout, transitioning to broader tailwater opportunities.
  • Castle River: remote, intimate, and richly stocked with native trout and whitefish.

Whether you’re chasing aggressive rainbows beneath towering cliffs or quietly nymphing for elusive cutthroats amid forest solitude, these rivers offer something unforgettable—if we just keep protecting them from environmental threats and overuse.
